Mayflies is a collection of 121 studio portraits of radical self-expression — real people photographed against a studio backdrop at the festivals, carnivals, and cultural gatherings where they had chosen to appear.

Over seven years and across three continents, Amsterdam-based photographer Darren Smith met more than a thousand people living all year to celebrate a single day. Each subject was pulled from the crowd and placed before the camera with nothing between them and the lens but who they had decided to be. The backdrop removes everything else. What remains is presence, identity, and the charge of transformation.

The mayfly lives brilliantly, and briefly. Smith's work is their legacy.

"Each page is a true delight, and clearly Darren is a master of his craft. The diversity of our human species is something to be celebrated and enjoyed — and there’s a beautiful cross-section of it on display here." - Amateur Photographer Magazine

"Incredible as it may seem, this collection of images gathered in 'Mayflies; displays a striking unity, deliciously decadent, wonderfully roaring, inviting us to plunge into a revealing, effervescent bath in which colors play a score as improbable as it is intoxicating.." - Compétence Photo Numéro 110

"Down to the smallest detail, the mayflies have become what they want to be at that moment [...] The result is a series of compelling and at times surreal portraits that can fire everyone’s imagination." - DE TROUW

"The portraits have a powerful presence. These are not party snapshots, but photos in a long tradition of respectful, perhaps even monumental portraits." - FD Persoonlijk

"Aalst carnivalists shine in photo book 'Mayflies': It's a world in itself." - HLN Belgium

From the author

“Starting in the summer of 2016, I started travelling to crowded parade streets, joining post-apocalyptic sound camps, getting lost in the labyrinth of winding nightclub corridors, in search of creative souls. The essence of radical self-expression is freedom, vulnerability, and the courage to reveal one’s true self in the most unfiltered way possible. I was inspired to create a lasting legacy of these people in their self-expressed beauty.”

“In my work people would emerge from the crowd, step into the studio space, and we would begin, the heart of the spectacle pulsing around us. The people I captured were participants in something larger—a collective energy shaped by music, movement, and shared experience. Each person who stepped into the studio brought with them a fragment of that collective pulse. From those fragments, from an unscripted chaos, formed the 'decisive moments' I sought.”

— Darren Smith
